In no particular order of merit, here it goes:

American Gangster

Denzel Washington portrays Frank Lucas, a real-life gangster from Harlem
who smuggled heroin into the United States on American service planes returning from the Vietnam War.
Russell Crowe portrays Richie Roberts, a detective attempting to bring down Lucas’ drug empire.

Frank was particularly known for cutting out middlemen in the drug trade and
buying heroin directly from his source in the Golden Triangle.
Lucas boasted that he smuggled heroin using the coffins of dead American servicemen.

And the real Frank Lucas and detective Richie Roberts.
I remember that fur outfit on Frank Lucas was specially featured in the movie because it attracted too much attention.

The Pursuit of Happyness

The movie is about Chris Gardner, family man and a salesman who
invested all of his family savings on this bone density scanner machine.
He had problem selling away the huge quantities of machines,
causing he and his family to fall into a bad financial situation.
His wife left him subsequently, leaving him with his young son.

The movie is about how he fought his way from a homeless man to
become CEO of a successful stockbrokerage firm.
This movie is touching especially in the scenes when you see how Chris Gardner struggles to keep the family together.
His determination to “make it” for him and his son brings me to tears too.

And if you’re curious how the real Chris Gardner looks like, here he is:

The final scene shows Chris walking with his son down a street.
His son is telling him a joke, when a man in a suit walks past.
Chris looks back as the man continues on.
The man in the suit is none other than the real Chris Gardner. (I love cameos!)

The Cinderella Man

Cinderella Man is about James J. Braddock, an Irish-American boxer from New Jersey,
formerly a light heavyweight contender, who is forced to give up boxing after breaking his hand in the ring.
As the US enters The Great Depression, Braddock does hard manual labor to support his family.
Unfortunately, he cannot get work every day.
Due to some twist of fate, he returned to the ring to fight again and defeats heavyweight champion Max Baer.

To me, this movie is about pride and going against the odds.
But the feeling when you see him win the final match is freaking shiok. Hee!
And this is the real Cinderella Man James J. Braddock.

Catch Me If You Can

This movie is pure brilliance.
I love everything about this movie – Leonardo Dicaprio, Tom Hanks and the crazy plot.
BUT, everything else becomes even crazier when you realized that it’s based on a true story!

This show is based on life of Frank Abagnale Jr., who before his 19th birthday,
successfully conned millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot,
a Georgia doctor and Louisiana attorney and parish prosecutor.
His primary crime was cheque forgery, becoming so skillful that
the FBI eventually turned to him for help in catching other cheque forgers.

The story is amazing because Frank was so young when he committed all that crime.
And the relationship between Frank and the FBI Agent (played by Tom Hanks) grew
from a police-and-thief relationship into friendship ultimately.
One of my favourite movies of all time.

Today, Frank is CEO of Abagnale & Associates, security consultants.

The Last King of Scotland

The Last King of Scotland tells the fictional story of Dr. Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy),
a young Scottish doctor who travels to Uganda and
becomes the personal physician to the dictator Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker).
The film is based on factual events of Amin’s rule.
The doctor was actually very trusted by Amin at the start of the show.
But Amin, who is always suspicious of the people around him, started losing trust in Garrigan.
Garrigan (who is quite a fucker in the show) had an affair with one of Amin’s wives and made her pregnant.
And Amin wants to kill him. Haha. Simple as that.

But the way they film the scene where Garrigan is being beaten up and tortured is pretty disturbing.

The show is pretty good, I’d give it 4 popcorns.
And to be honest, I think the most awesome part is Forest Whitaker’s awesome accent in the show!

Schindler’s List

The story is set during the World War II period.
Oskar Schindler, a German businessman saved the lives of more than a thousand Polish-Jewish refugees
during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories.
Although he is also a Nazi member,
he bribed Nazi officials with huge sums of money to keep his workers alive.
As the war ended, Oskar Schindler had to leave.
He packs a car in the night, and bids farewell to his workers.
They give him a letter explaining he is not a criminal to them, together with a ring secretly made from a worker’s gold dental bridge and engraved with a Talmudic quotation,
“Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”

I LOVE the main theme for the movie composed by John Williams.

Changeling

Based on real life events in 1928 Los Angeles, the film stars Angelina Jolie as a woman
who is reunited with her missing son — only to realize he is an impostor.
She confronts the city authorities, who vilify her as an unfit mother and brand her delusional.
The dramatized incident was connected to the “Wineville Chicken Coop” kidnapping and murder case.
Changeling explores female disempowerment, political corruption,
child endangerment and the repercussions of violence.

And the real Christine Collins and her son, Walter.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

This movie freaks me out.
And the worse part is that it’s loosely based on a true story.
I read up about it the night I finished watching the movie, and it really did scare the shit out of me.

The story is about Emily Rose being possessed and
going through exorcism performed by a priest, Father Richard Moore.
After her death, Father Richard Moore was actually on trial for negligent homicide.
The movie is not exactly hardcore horror-horror kinda movie,
as there are also scenes of the priest telling Emily Rose’s story.

Oh well, still freaks the shit outta me.

The real Emily Rose is actually called Anneliese Michel.
She died in 1976, aged 23.

A Beautiful Mind

This is a story about John Forbes Nash, Jr., a Nobel Laureate in Economics.
The story begins in the early years of a young schizophrenic prodigy named John Nash.
Early in the movie, Nash begins developing paranoid schizophrenia and endures delusional episodes
while painfully watching the loss and burden his condition brings on his wife and friends.
The film fictionally portrayed his hallucinations as visual and auditory,
when in fact they were exclusively auditory.

Oh! My favourite scene in the movie is when Russell Crowe draws shapes by joining the stars in the sky.
So romantic. Hahaha.

Milk

Milk is a film on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Bernard Milk,
who was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California.
But he was later assassinated by Dan White, another city supervisor who had recently resigned
but wanted his job back.

Everything about this show was fabulous except the kiss scene between Sean Penn and James Franco. Haha!
Am sure my gay friends will love it though. Lol.

Lovers in love, are you guilty of being unromantic?
When I was younger, I remember my Mom telling me that men
who love to eat sweet stuff are always more romantic that those who doesn’t.
The star sign experts also claim that there are some signs that are more romantic than the others.
Well, I don’t buy any of that.
To me, I believe that everyone can be romantic.
Being romantic doesn’t always revolves around getting expensive gifts,
or setting up surprise candlelight dinners.
It’s easy to show you love, and sometimes just a small gesture can let your loved one be the happiest person.

We are often caught up with our endless work commitments.
Sometimes when you’re together with someone for too long a period,
you might subconsciously take that person for granted too.
So here is a little nudge for everyone out there.
Read these little suggestions on how you can put a smile on your loved one’s face, and try them today!

We are all familiar with the usual Valentines’ Day, Christmas and Anniversary procedures.
But what about dropping a gift for your loved one even on an ordinary day?
It doesn’t have to be anything expensive -
a stalk of rose, a love letter, a box of his favourite chocolates,
I’m sure it will make your darling grin foolishly when he or she sees the gift.

Pardon me for being crude, but a shoulder rub could be way better than a blowjob sometimes.
We are all busy individuals. And work can be really be quite a bitch.
Offer to give him a shoulder rub after his bath or before he goes to bed.
That will also show him that his health and well-being matters a lot to you.
It’s a perfect way to show your love.

Some of the luckier ones will probably have a maid around the house.
But for most of us, we often have a lot of chores to do at home.
Lending a hand when he or she is flustered over the chores is a great way to show that you care.
Even if it’s something small like opening his mails and laying them neatly so that he can check them easily,
or just cleaning up his room together with him instead of lazing around on the bed while he’s at it.
It’s actually fun to do chores together sometimes.
Being pro-active in helping him out with his chores is a great way to help lighten his load.
Well, that means more time available for you also. Isn’t it great? :)

There was one time when Buttons and I were chatting online and he commented that he was hungry,
and I made him noodles (erm, not instant noodles excuse me!),
packed them and took a cab from Yishun to Bedok so that he can eat my special homecooked supper.
I could tell that he felt really happy eating that noodles!
He knows I’m a very lazy person, but whenever I offer to wake up at 6am with him to make him breakfast,
he will smile from ear-to-ear and thank me.
The point is, I think we’ll all feel very loved when our loved ones prepare food for us.
Start whipping some dishes today!

Unfortunately, not all of us are as talented when it comes to music.
But if that piece of music or that poem is for your loved one, who cares?
Because even if the words don’t rhyme and the melody sucks, they will still love it to bits!
Buttons & I used to go to the Jalan Kayu Roti Prata almost every week in the past,
and we’re always seated on Table 112.
So one time he just whipped out his guitar and wrote a song with “112″ as the theme.
(112 meaning Do Do Re)
I have that song on my iPod, and it never fails to melt my heart everytime it’s being played.
And I’m actually smiling as I’m typing this. Hee!

I remember Sinsin telling me once, that it is of utmost importance that we should make sure
we still look good even after we’re attached or married.
(Well, you would want to at least have some “market value” if you’re ditched.)
That aside, I think it’s a way of showing your love too – by taking care of your appearance and looks.
I’m sure your loved one will feel happier bringing you out to show his friends too.
Yes, some people will say that looks aren’t important, love rules.
But face it, I’m sure you don’t want your boyfriend to have 38″ waist just 2 years after marriage right?
Being responsible of your health, well-being and appearance is definitely a way of saying I Love You.

I don’t know about you, but I’m actually a very “physical” person.
Sometimes a touch or a hug can mean so much more than words.
Holding his hand when he needs support, hugging him when he is afraid;
I’m certain these little gestures will warm his heart.

I know that we’re all busy with our lives.
And even when two people are dating, there are times when they just cannot be there for each other.
Well, I think it’s really important that we should always try to be there when that someone needs us.
Even if it’s just for a hug.
Even when all he needs is for us to say something that he already knew.
Even when all he wanted is just a word of assurance that can be said through the telephone.
Being there, physically, really makes a very big difference.

This is one of my personal favourites.
I love giving and receiving personal notes.
Stuffing a little note filled with sweet nothings into his wallet,
or notes with word of encouragement in his socks if you know he hates going to work,
it didn’t take much effort on your side but it will surely make his day.
Well, you can always start by sending your loved one an email to tell him how much you’ve been missing him.
And sometimes, snail mail works like magic too! :)

What is a better way to say I Love You than saying “I Love You” itself?
It is important to communicate and even more important to let your feelings be known.
Your loved ones might cringe if you tell him you love him more than bee loves honey,
you all can laugh at how mushy and disgusting you two are,
but at the end of the day, I’m sure he will be all smittened.
Remind each other of how you two fell in love with each other.
And that special someone you love him, STILL! :p

I think this one is going to make everyone laugh at least a little.
Don’t know about you but I can get quite paranoid sometimes,
especially when it comes to looking after my belongings.

Even when we’re very careful, there are still pickpockets & thieves all around us.
So, it is also out responsibility to make sure we keep out valuables out of their sight.
Apparently, some of the other folks were even more obsessed about it.

This socket is not meant to run electricity.
Instead, it serves as a good secret compartment for your cash and other valuables.
It looks just like a normal electric socket when it is being closed, not a bit conspicuous.
But might not be as convincing if used in Singapore though.

I am very sure no thieves will be interested in breaking into your car if they saw stereo system.
Totally awesome.

This is another freaking funny stunt! Hahaha!

Okay, this is really cool.
What an interesting way to carry your laptop around.
But I think you might give yourself away after a while -

To be honest, I’m a little surprised!

Or what the Singaporeans call “water coolers”.
Disgusting. I used to really like these coolers when I was in school!

Saliva, bacteria and faecal matter are some of the examples of the substances found on the handles.
Well it’s not hard to understand since these shopping carts are used by so many shoppers everyday.

I first met Beatrice at Channel U’s Hey Gorgeous! competition.
Even at the first time I saw her when I walked into the meeting room, I couldn’t take my eyes off her!
She has an amazing smile and cheekbones every girl dreams to have.
And on top of that, she has a really good personality as well.
She is humble and also really personable.
In a nutshell, Beatrice really got the whole package.

Emileen Lim

I met at The New Paper New Face competition as well.
She’s bubbly and really a great deal of fun to hang out with.

Genecia Luo

I met Genecia many years ago on a modeling assignment.
And later in more recent years, we were both involved in a TVC for Vanilla magazine.

Victoria Galistan

Victoria Galistan was like an angel when she first appeared at Hall 2 in NTU during our Orientation Camp.
We were all stinky and dirty, and looking nerdy in our hall tee shirts when she appeared in the wee hours in hall to send porridge to her boyfriend.
Victoria is a great friend and is it is always so easy to strike up a conversation with her.
She is bubbly and undeniably gorgeous – undoubtedly the prettiest Singapore Girl I’ve ever seen. :)

I hope those girls I didn’t mention don’t ditch our friendship after reading this entry.

Well, we all started off as individuals.
And as much as you love your friends, do keep in mind that your partner has his own social life too.
Of course, it would be perfect if you can get to know his friends too
And even better if you guys can clique!
In my opinion, never challenge a guy to choose between you and his bunch of guys.
Friends are really important people indeed.
Think. Who do you run to when you’re having a tiff with your boyfriend? -Your girlfriends!

Worrying too much about the future just cause unnecessary tension and pressure on the couple.
“Do you think you will still love me after 5 years?”
“When we get married in future, are we going to split the household workload?”
Why worry about tomorrow’s problems when you can simply just enjoy today?
Many arguments are caused by these unimportant debates and mindless questions,
and I have to admit, often coming from the females.
Honestly, if I were to imagine being asked such questions everyday, I’ll be quite irritated as well.
But that said, I’ll still keep asking because I sometimes seek comfort from the answers I receive.

I know this may sound very cliche.
But when you fall in love with someone, you fall in love with both this good and bad points.
And expecting someone to change after you two get together, or get married, is almost near impossible.
Well that’s on the more serious note, of course.
Little things like fashion sense & small bad habits may have the chance of being influenced by you,
but at the end of the day, you just have to learn to accept that nobody is ever perfect.

Like what they always say, “it takes two hands to clap”.
If you’re guilty of always blaming your partner for anything that went wrong, I guess it’s time you reflect upon yourself.
If he is late, why not ask him what happened on the way to meet you instead of jumping to conclusions?
If he is always grumpy when he is with you, perhaps you can ask him why has made his day gone wrong?
When you did something that had caused some unhappiness between the two of you, I’m sure you’d appreciate it too,
if he asks if there are any problems you are facing instead of pushing the blame all to you right away.

I guess at my age, this might be one of the biggest problems the ladies will be facing.
Everybody has different ideals about marriage and settling down.
It is inevitable if you would scare your boyfriends away if you keep trying to rush into things.
And on a less serious note, there is always a right time to pop the “I love you”s & physical intimacy when you’re in a new relationship.
Take things slow and let things happen naturally.

I will have to say that I’m very guilty of this sin. Green-eyed monsters, please join the line.
It may be due to your previous bad experiences or encounters with heartbreakers, but jealousy kills slowly.
Where there is jealousy, there will be no trust.
Interaction and conversations with the opposite sex is very normal.
And if you get jealous when there is no real reason to, it will seriously cause great harm to the relationship.
That being said, I think it’s important that you always get that sense of security from your partner as well.
Do talk about it & let him know if you need assurance and more security in your relationship.

If you are guilty of this, then your current lover must be in agony.
If you’re still hung up over your previous relationship, you probably need more time to nurse your little broken soul.
But if you’re just one of those irritating brats who like to compare your current partner with your ex
then it’s really time to do something about it.
I can understand completely when you say that it’s inevitable to compare sometimes.
We all compare – it’s only natural.
But like what I’ve mentioned earlier, no one is perfect.
Next time you catch yourself comparing again, why not compare something that your current boyfriend has that your ex doesn’t?
Come to terms with the reality, and tell yourself that if you keep wanting to have the best of both worlds,
you’ll probably end up with nothing.

It takes a lot of courage to walk away from something you are so familiar with.
And that fear and insecurity about the unknown world out there always gets us stuck in a dilemma.
This was exactly what I was facing when I was still with the-one-who-shall-not-speak-of.
But honestly, if you choose not to walk away now, you will still come face-to-face with the same problem few years down the road.
So if that is not what you want, try to talk about the problem with your loved one and see what can be done to bring that spark back.
And if both of you are too tired to do anything about it, then it’s time to let go.

There is basically no relationship without trust and communication.
It takes years to build up on trust but only seconds to destroy it.
If you are unhappy about something, do let your partner know.
If you’re unhappy and he is left clueless, it will be a little unfair isn’t it?
I think this is pretty straight forward, and everyone should agree with this.

Honestly, there can’t be another faster or more cowardly way to end a relationship.
I guess this is the mistake everyone tries to avoid, but probably also one of the more common pitfalls causing broken relationships. But as much as it hurts, look at the bright side – it somehow makes moving on easier isn’t it? If you want to see someone else, be a responsible lover and end your relationship first.

And another bad thing we always do when we’re in a relationship is to mention breaking up all the time.
It might be able to scare your boyfriend for the first few times and will get him back at your feet again, but over time, it will just appear as if you don’t treat him seriously at all. Don’t mention anything about breaking up all the time unless you really mean it. And if “breaking up” doesn’t present itself as an option, then your relationship will last long enough until the cows come home.

That being said, I think we still have a lot to learn about maintaining a good relationship with our loved one.
It’s always easy to fall in love but hard to stay in love.
I think I can be found guilty of all of those faults mentioned above.
But it’s never too late to learn.

In no particular order, I’d first like to introduce CLOSER.
Starring Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Natalie Portman,
this show has probably already won half the battle with its impressive cast.
This movie is believable, accurate and
probably a little too harsh showcasing how fucked up
adults, relationship and sex can turn out to be.

I love the intensity of the show and particularly the dialogues.

TWO

SILENCE OF THE LAMB needs no introduction.
Total pure classic.
All it takes is one cold stare from the intelligent and psychotic
Dr. Hannibal Lecter to send chills down your spine.
I always liked thrillers and particularly this one,
because it’s really god damn sick.

THREE

Oh! I love GHOST by Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze.
I’ve watched it around three times & I adore everything
from Unchained Melody to Demi Moore‘s short crop in that show.
It left me at the edge of my chair
feeling angry & heartbroken all at the same time.

I’m sure everyone would know that classic scene at the pottery wheel.
This one is a must watch!

FOUR

AMELIE is my favourite girl.
Enchanted, whimsical & unimaginably amusing.
She seeks solitude and loves it.
I love the cinematography of this movie and
how little details are always brought to the viewers’ attention.
It taught me how to appreciate small things in life.
How I wish I can see the world through Amelie’s eyes!

I can still remember the scene when Amelie asked herself -
“How many people are having an orgasm in Paris right now?”
And she can randomly decide on “Fifteen”.

My favourite quote from the movie?
“You’ll never be a vegetable – even artichokes have hearts.”

FIVE

Yet another nervewrecking, mind effing movie.
Buttons & I totally agreed that this movie has got to be in the top ten!
Firstly, there’s Ashton Kutcher in it.
Secondly, I totally love “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis.
And even if those two reasons are invalid,
the plot of this show has got to be rated as TOTALLY AWESOME.
BUTTERFLY EFFECT – what a perfect name for this movie.

SIX

I remember watching this movie when I was still a kid.
The scene with the dog escaping the fire in the tunnel is truly memorable.
I haven’t watched this one in a long time though.
But from what I could gather (based on my memories of the show),
this movie is totally fantastic!
Will Smith rocked.
And if I remember correctly,
the actor who was the US President was quite cute too.

SEVEN

HORS DE PRIX, also known as Priceless.
I caught this show in the theatre twice when it was being screened.
Again by one of my favourite actress, Audrey Tautou.
I just cannot take my eyes off Irene (played by Audrey) in this movie.
It’s the love story between a gold digger and a poor waiter.
But some twists came along & made this one a really adorable film!

EIGHT

BEFORE SUNRISE is about two strangers spending a night in Vienna.
The affinity between them is almost magical but yet very convincing.
The movie doesn’t boast of a lot of action or whatsoever,
just packed with intriguing and interesting conversations.

The sequel, BEFORE SUNSET is shot 9 years after the first movie.
1995 & 2004.
In the movie, it was exactly 9 years apart as well.
So you can really see Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy aging a little.
I love the song “Let Me Sing You A Waltz” in this one.
Love it!

NINE

Leonardo Dicaprio‘s acting was totally awesome in this.
Period.

TEN

Who doesn’t love the whole espionage-gone-wrong,
‘the corporation is turned against you’ idea?
I think somehow Singaporeans loved this one for the
whole anti-establishment, sanitised and removed ‘agency’ in it.

Besides, Matt Damon was real beefed up for the film as well.
Yummy.

Sorry that I ain’t no Star Wars or Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter fan.
There are really too many shows that I adore!
Actually I’m one big sucker for chick flicks too.
Bring It On. Sex And The City. Devil Wears Prada. Mean Girls.

I TOTALLY LOVE THEM!

I didn’t include any Chinese shows as well – WAY TOO MANY to mention!
